In the 11 months that have passed since the beginning of the year, attackers stole $3.37 billion worth of cryptocurrency
According to PeckShield, in the fall alone, cryptocurrency companies lost $1.3 billion due to fraud.
So, in September, there were 17 hacks, as a result of which losses amounted to $171 million. The market maker Wintermute suffered losses of $160 million.
In October, as a result of 44 hacker attacks, the attackers stole $760.2 million worth of cryptocurrency. Then the BNB Chain was hacked for $544 million, but the scammers were able to withdraw only $100 million of them – the other part of the funds was blocked by the developers. Then the hacker stole $1 million from the BitKeep cryptocurrency wallet by hacking it through the swap function. Another hack involved the Team Finance launchpad, which lost $14.5 million due to a smart contract migration error.
As of November, there were 29 hacks that resulted in the theft of $391 million in various digital assets. The largest was the attack on the Derbit wallet and the theft of assets from FTX accounts in the first half of the month. Another $3 million was stolen from Skyward Finance’s NEAR Protocol. An unknown hacker was able to “empty the reserves” of the project through a vulnerability in the smart contract.
Coinsquare was also reported to have been hacked, but company representatives assured that clients’ assets are “securely stored in cold storage and are not at risk.”
At the same time, over the three months of the summer, crypto companies suffered from hacks in the amount of about $ 446 million. In June, the loss from 21 attacks amounted to $ 227.76 million, in July the companies suffered losses from 12 hacks in the amount of $ 10.2 million, and in August there were 18 attacks, as a result of which $208.5 million was lost.
